On April 21st 2011, the CBC announced the commission of a new dramatic series for the winter 2012 season, to be titled Arctic Air. The series would be produced by Vancouver-based production company Omni Film.

Omni had previously produced several series for the CBC, among them The Odyssey, Edgemont and Dragon Boys, as well as several successful seasons of Ice Pilots NWT for Canada’s History Channel.  At the CBC’s June 8th 2011 Upfront Presentation, Arctic Air was noted as a planned entry for midseason 2011-2012.

Arctic Air was a one hour dramatic adventure series about a group of renegade pilots who flew small bush planes and huge WW II propellor-driven planes on daily missions in the North.

The one-hour series premiered on CBC on Tuesday January 10th 2012 at 9:00 pm, and was created by Ian Weir. The first series ended on March 13th 2012, after delivering to the CBC the best ratings ever for a Canadian drama series, beating North of 60’s numbers in the process.

Om April 19th 2012 it was announced that Arctic Air had been renewed and would be in the CBC schedule in the Fall of 2012.  Later, on November 13th, the second season start date was reset to January 9th 2013.

On April 3rd 2013 the CBC announced that Arctic Air would return in the 2013-14 schedule with Season Three. It began on a new day, Tuesday, on January 7th 2014, at 9 pm. However, on March 18th the CBC announced that Season Three would be the last for Arctic Air, which would not be renewed.
