On February 13th 2011 the CBC announced that it had committed to a full-season order for Mr. D, a sitcom that would star Toronto school teacher-turned-comic Gerry Dee, known for his appearances in Last Comic Standing.
The comedy pilot from Topsail Productions was produced by Michael Volpe and Gerard Donoghue, with Steve Wright as director, and the series would debut during the 2011-2012 season.
Mr D. debuted on CBC on January 9th 2012, and concluded its first season on Monday, April 2nd 2012. On April 19th the CBC announced that Mr. D. would return in the CBC’s Fall schedule. On November 13th the start date was rescheduled to January 7th 2013, with Russell Peters kicking off the new season as a special guest.
On April 3rd 2013 the CBC announced that Mr. D would be returning to the schedule during the 2013-14 season. Later, February 24th 2014 was announced as the start date for the new season.
On April 4th 2014, Mr. D. was included in an announced list of programs that would be part of the network’s 2014-15 schedule. On May 29th the CBC released its fall schedule, but Mr. D was not included, being held for mid-season entry.
Season 4 debited on January 20th 2015 and concluded on March 10th, following an announcement on March 4th that the series would return to the CBC schedule in 2016 with a further 13 half-hour episodes. Season 5 began on January 19th and concluded on April 12th 2016, with Season 6 playing from October 18th to December 27th 2016, and season 7 from September 26th to December 5th 2017.
In August 2018 it was announced that Mr. D had wrapped production on its eighth season in Halifax, and that this would be the last in the series. Created, written and starring comedian Gerry Dee, the series earned him a Canadian Screen Award in 2013 for Best Performance by an Actor in a Continuing Leading Comedic Role.
Season 8 of Mr. D began on CBC on November 7th 2018, and the final original episode was aired on Wednesday, December 19th 2018.
