The CBC Television schedule always devoted a time slot to documentaries. Witness was an example of this category. It offered independent filmmakers the opportunity to screen their work to a larger audience. Witness featured some CBC produced films but also debuted independent productions from around the world.
The CBC description: “as a showcase for Canada’s top independent filmmakers, Witness focuses its penetrating cameras on the people, places and events that shape our lives, capturing a unique and revelatory view from the inside.” Veteran broadcaster Knowlton Nash served as the program’s host.
