On May 22, 2012 the CBC announced that it was launching a nationwide search for a Dorothy to appear on CBC Television’s Over the Rainbow and star in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s forthcoming Canadian production of The Wizard of Oz.
One aspiring performer would be selected the winner of Over The Rainbow, which would be produced by Temple Street Productions. The winning Dorothy would star in a new Andrew Lloyd Webber’s production of The Wizard of Oz, which would be opening at the Ed Mirvish Theatre in Toronto in December 2012.
“We’re looking for a fresh new star in the making, and Canadians will play a key role in helping us to find our “Dorothy,” said David Mirvish, Mirvish Productions. “The new Dorothy must be able to not only sing, act and dance at a high level, but also have the charisma and presence to carry a marquee production on one of the country’s largest stages night after night.”
The CBC announced that Daryn Jones would be the host of the new CBC reality series, which would debut in September. Aspiring Dorothys would compete on-air at 8pm on Sundays, with results shows on Mondays at 8pm.
The series made its debut on CBC on Sunday September 16th 2012, with the first results show the following evening
