Katts and Dog
Katts and his Dog

Take one German shepherd and one cop. Call the cop Katts. Hey presto! A half-hour television series. This one did pretty well for CTV, with Rudy the dog (real name Rudolph von Holstein III) using his nose and his dogged determination to help his master catch the bad guys, and leave viewers smiling at the end of each week’s episode. Jesse Collins starred as Officer Hank Katts in all 106 episodes of this series, and directed seven of them. Andrew Bednarski was also a cast regular, playing Hank’s son Stevie. Geraint Wyn Davies and Sharon Acker were among the many guest stars, along with Ted Dykstra, Camilla Scott, Barbara Hamilton and Henry Czerny.

The series was a Canada/France co-production. It aired on CTV on Fridays at 8:00pm starting in September 1988, moving to Saturdays at 8:00pm the following year, where it stayed until the series ended in the fall of 1993. It played on the U.S. Family Channel, where its title was Rin Tin Tin K-9 Cop. The series spawned a two-hour movie in 1991.
