Produced in Calgary, this series was based on the successful books about the Fleming family of Hudson, Alberta. Heartland was the name of the place where injured or abused horses went to recover and be re-located. Its slot on Sunday nights continued a long line of successful family-oriented dramas made popular by the CBC throughout its history. This program was self-described, “For every moment that pulls on your heartstrings there will be an equally laugh-out-loud funny moment.” Shot in the foothills of Alberta, the exterior footage offered viewers a spectacular backdrop to the unfolding drama.
Heartland was renewed for the 2008-2009 and 2009 -2010 seasons, and Heartland returned to the schedule in September 2010, running through to March 26th 2011. Meantime, on February 13th the CBC had included Heartland in a list of Canadian series that had been renewed for the 2011-2012 season. On June 8th, the CBC advised that Heartland would return on Sunday September 18th at 7 pm.
On April 19th 2012 the CBC announced that Heartland would be returning to the CBC schedule in the Fall.
The new season of Heartland made its debut on CBC on Sunday September 16th at 7:00 pm. After a break at the end of the year, it returned to the schedule on Sunday January 6th 2013, and the series ended on April 21st 2013
On April 3rd 2013, Heartland was included in a list of programs that were announced as returning to the CBC schedule during the 2013-14 season, and series seven began on October 6th 2013.
On April 4th 2014, Heartland was again included on a list of CBC programs that would be returning to the schedule during the 2014-15 season, and in the CBC fall schedule announced on May 29th, the series was shown on Sundays at 7:00 pm.
On March 4th 2015 the CBC announced that a further series of Heartland episodes would be produced for broadcast in the Fall of 2015, and subsequent renewals had Heartland still in the CBC schedule at the start of the 2017-18 season. On March 25th 2019, the CBC announced that a thirteenth season of 10 60-minute episodes of Heartland would be scheduled in the 2019-2020 season.

On May 27th 2020, the CBC announced that the Seven24 Films and Dynamo Films production of Heartland would return to the schedule for a fourteenth season in the winter of 2020-21.
