Current, The

Network: CBC Radio

Broadcast Run: 2000

Broadcast Medium: Radio

Aired weekdays from 8:30am to 10am on Radio One; debuted in 2000. This 90-minute current affairs program was hosted by long time Broadcast Journalist Anna Maria Tremonti. It was an eclectic mix of news and long form documentaries designed to “look for meaning in the chaos”. But the program did not take itself too seriously, featuring “The Voice” at the top of every broadcast commenting on the headlines of the day. It was a show designed to offer listeners a perspective on the news of the day with interviews and commentary. Host: Anna Maria Tremonti; Executive Producer: Pam Bertrand; Producers: Lisa Ayuso, Willy Barth, Jennifer Beard, Aaron Brindle, John Chipman, Dominic Gerard, Richard Goddard, Kathleen Goldhar, Salem Shoueb Mojadidi, Arif Noorani, Erin Pettit, Pedro Sanchez, Theresa Singh, Idella Sturino, Jeff Warren, Gordon Westmacott and Christopher Wodskou.

On May 27th 2019, the CBC announced that Anna Maria Tremonti would be leaving The Current after 17 seasons of hosting the weekday morning current affairs radio show in order to produce and host new, original podcasts for CBC.  Her last day with The Current would be June 20. CBC Radio would conduct a search for a new host of The Current, which would continue in its 8:30 a.m. timeslot.

In September 2019, Laura Lynch was named interim host of CBC Radio’s The Current. Based in Vancouver, the veteran foreign and political affairs correspondent had previously filled in for Anna Maria Tremonti. On October 24th, the CBC announced that Matt Galloway, who had been host of CBC Toronto’s Metro Morning since March 2010, would become the permanent host of The Current effective January 6th 2020.  Laura Lynch would continue to host the show until then.  Matt Galloway’s last day on Metro Morning would be December 6th 2019.
