Adult Swim (Formerly Action)

Current Station Group: Corus Entertainment Inc.

In 2000, Showcase Television Inc. (division of Alliance Atlantis) received CRTC approval to launch Action Television, “a national English-language Category 2 specialty television service devoted to action movies and series primarily driven by a fast-paced fictional plot featuring car chases, explosions, special effects, or martial arts.” Showcase Action launched on September 7, 2001. The Showcase part of the name came from another Alliance Atlantis channel, Showcase. In 2008, CW Media (CanWest and Goldman Sachs Capital Partners) acquired control of Showcase Action through its purchase of Alliance Atlantis’ broadcasting assets. Shaw Communications acquired control of Action in 2010. In 2016, Shaw Communications sold Shaw Media to Corus Entertainment. Action was replaced April 1, 2019, by Adult Swim, which started in Canada as a late-night program block on the Cartoon Network on July 4, 2012. Before this Adult Swim programs were seen after-hours on Teletoon’s adult programming block, Teletoon at Night. Much of Adult Swim’s programming came from its American counterpart.
