Coroner was a one-hour drama about Jenny Cooper, a coroner who investigated unexplained or sudden deaths in the city of Toronto. Fierce and quick-witted, Jenny was a newly-widowed single mother, and was played by Serinda Swan, with Roger Cross in a co-starring role.
The one-hour series premiered on CBC on January 7th, 2019, and ran for eight weeks to February 25th. On March 25th the CBC announced that the series had been renewed for a further eight episodes.
On May 27th 2020, the CBC announced that Coroner had been renewed for season 3 in the winter of 2020-2021, and in August 2020, Muse Entertainment, Back Alley Films and Cineflix Studios started production in Toronto on Season 3 of this CBC original drama. Joining the cast for the new season were Mark Taylor as Clark, a crown attorney working with Jenny on a new inquest, and Uni Park as Melanie, the new pathologist. The upcoming season would include two additional one-hour episodes, for a total of ten, scheduled to debut on CBC and CBC Gem in Winter 2021.
