A two-part mini-series dramatizing the events of the Halifax explosion. On December 6, 1917, two ships collided in Halifax harbour. One of the ships, bound for Europe, was loaded with munitions. The blast leveled most of the city [approximately 2 square kilometers] leaving 2,000 dead and 9,000 injured as a result of flying glass and debris.
Part one aired October 26, 2003; part two-aired October 27, 2003. It was written by Keith Ross Leckie and directed by Bruce Pittman; produced by Heather Goldin Haldane and Jenipher Ritchie. Executive producers: Mary Young Leckie of Tapestry Pictures Inc. and Michael Donovan of Salter Street Films, winner of an Academy Award for Bowling For Columbine. The movie starred Graham Greene, Pete Postlethwaite, Vincent Walsh, Richard Donat, Lynne Griffin and Tamara Hope. A companion documentary also aired, entitled, City of Ruins-The Halifax Explosion.
