Music for a Sunday Afternoon

Network: CBC Television Network

Broadcast Run: 1967

Broadcast Medium: Television

Aired Sunday afternoons at 3:00 PM from February 5 to March 26, 1967.

CBC produced a significant number of television programs dedicated to classical music, of which this series was typical. Festival was the parent show that aired in primetime during the week, but this show had a different approach: it went behind the scenes. It debuted with a BBC documentary about the making of a Wagner opera recording, followed by a rehearsal and performance of Mozart’s Double Concerto by Daniel Barenboim and Vladimir Ashkenazy. Other programs in the series included a recital by violinist Isaac Stern, a performance of Les Sylphides by Les Grands Ballets Canadiens, Glenn Gould playing music by Beethoven, and a performance of the opera Cavalleria Rusticana, by Mascagni.
