This public affairs series was the first major documentary show offered by the CBC. Throughout each season, the program adopted three different formats: dramas, magazine shows and featured themes, often consisting of mini-series with different producers and hosts. Vincent Tovell and program organizer Eric Koch produced the series.
Explorations offered a very eclectic mix of different programs from the philosophical to the scientific; from the social to the political and everything else in between. It often featured drama and adapted works from the classics, such as The Republic by Plato, and modern authors such as Tennessee Williams. It also featured documentary films including works by John Grierson of the National Film Board of Canada, and it featured Marshall McLuhan on a regular basis.
Percy Saltzman, Allan Miller and Alan Jarvis each hosted the program during its eight-year run.
