Toby

Network: CBC Television Network

Broadcast Run: 1968 to 1969

Broadcast Medium: Television

Aired Friday afternoons at 4:30 PM from October 4, 1968 to June 27, 1969.

Considered by some critics as the Canadian Gidget, the character of Toby was by all accounts the antithesis of the swinging Sixties. Her dream was to marry her college sweetheart and have 3 kids. Toby lived with her parents and was chummy with Jean-Jacques Roberge, a French Canadian exchange student, boarding in the Mitchell household.

The show only lasted one season, doomed to fail due to a lousy time-slot and a low budget. Speaking of her part, Susan Petrie, lead actress, said to the Toronto Daily Star: “Toby is supposed to be the perfect teenager. I’m not sure I believe her yet…. You know, I would like to tell it like it is. Toby is the type of girl who will go to college, marry the guy she meets in English 345, arrange flowers, be a good hostess- -and raise more Tobys”.

In addition to the cast listed below, Jeannie Beker – later to become famous for her work in the fashion field and her own Fashion TV series – had a recurring role.

Cast:

Susan Petrie as Toby Mitchell

Peter Young as Mark Mitchell

Arch McDonell as Leonard Mitchell

Micki Moore as Jennifer Mitchell

Robert Duparc as J J Roberge
