A lively debate show, moderated by well-known Canadian author Pierre Berton, The Great Debate featured a wide array of guest debaters, from Canadian nationalist Mel Hurtig to American actress Gloria Swanson. The debaters tackled a new controversial topic each week. Some examples included the acceptable use of violence as an ideological weapon, and Canadian bilingualism, was it workable.

First broadcast in 1974, the series ran into some financial trouble after a few years on air, went into hiatus and then was eventually back on air in 1983 on CHCH-TV in Hamilton.
