Strategy

Network: CBC Television Network

Broadcast Run: 1969

Broadcast Medium: Television

Aired Monday to Friday at 2PM, from April 1 to October 7, 1969.

Robert F. Aaron, who worked for NBC, developed this game show specifically for the CBC. Produced in a large studio, the program featured contestants battling in an elaborate game of ‘darts’. The team that was closest to the center, won the match.

The board was laid out on the floor. Each team, often a couple, had to answer questions to advance. The teams could also block an opponent and select spots on the board that were booby-traps that restricted moves to the center.

Alex Trebek was the host of this show, having had considerable experience on Reach For The Top, for television, and CBC Radio duties. This show had a big budget and set design. It also featured the lovely and talented Dee Miles, the model who charted the progress of each team, and CHUM radio DJ, Jay Nelson.

Non-cash prizes included large appliances and furniture. CBC’s publicity department described the show this way: “What makes Strategy different from other television game shows is the circle. It is painted in different colours to denote four separate zones. It is a maze, much like the snakes and ladders game of years ago.”
