St.Lawrence North

Network: CBC Television Network

Broadcast Run: 1960 to 1967

Broadcast Medium: Television

Aired at various times from 1960 to 1967.

CBC aired this series of 30 minute programs to mark Canada’s Centennial, but the content was quite extensive. Produced by Crawley Films of Montreal, this series took a closer look at the economy and culture of the country, north of the St. Lawrence River.

The first show traced the route of Jacques Cartier, one of the first explorers of North America. Subsequent shows examined the lives of the Montagnais of Northern Quebec, the native caribou hunt, the whale hunters of L’Anse aux Basques and the Labrador seal hunt. The program proved a success in syndication, having been purchased by broadcasters in Italy, Australia and West Germany.
