1956
Soo Line Broadcasting Co. Ltd. applied for an AM radio licence at Weyburn. The company proposed to operate a station on 1340 kHz with a full-time power of 250 watts.
1957
Soo Line Broadcasting was granted a licence by the CBC and CFSL signed on the air on August 16. The call sign: Canada’s Famous Soo Line.
1958
Keith D. Baker was general manager.
Slogan: Radio Station CFSL (250 watts / 1340 kc) Weyburn, SK. Serving two cities (Weyburn / Estevan) and Canada’s Famous Soo Line with information – entertainment – service.
1961
Soo Line opened CJSL-AM Estevan.
1968
Soo Line Broadcasting applied to change the frequency of CFSL from 1340 to 1190 kHz and to increase power from 1,000 watts day and 250 watts night to 10,000 watts day and 5,000 watts at night, DA-N. The application was approved by the BBG.
1972
On July 24, a transfer of shares in Soo Line Broadcasting Ltd. was approved: from Beaver Investments Ltd. to James T. Laing and Tom G. Laing, from A. O. Graham to James T. Laing, and from J.W.W. Graham to Tom G. Laing.
1974
On July 11, James T. Laing was authorized to increase his ownership in Soo Line from 42 to 53% of the common shares with the transfer of 2/3 of those shares from J.H. Staveley, A.E.S. Warrington, Mrs. A.E.S. Warrington, J. William Mryglod and Joseph Mryglod to Laing.
1980
Chuck Richardson, Darwin Lackey and Bill Rurdachyk covered curling for CFSL. Jim Laing was manager.
1987
Soo Line Broadcasting president Thomas G. Laing passed away September 3. He was 73. He founded CFSL in 1957 and CJSL in 1959. Laing served as president of both the Saskatchewan and Western Association of Broadcasters, and as director of the C.A.B. He was a prominent businessman in southern Saskatchewan, and from 1955 to 1966 served as an alderman and later, mayor of Weyburn.
1991
By 1991, CFSL had moved to 1190 kHz and increased power to 10,000 watts day and 5,000 watts night.
1995
Soo Line Broadcasting Co. Ltd. (CFSL Weyburn and CJSL Estevan) was purchased by Frontier City Broadcasting Company Limited (Golden West Broadcasting).
2006
On April 24 the CRTC approved Golden West Broadcasting’s application to operate a new FM station at Weyburn. The new station would offer a Rock and Rock-oriented music format, appealing to a younger demographic than CFSL’s Country music format.
2010
On May 28, the CRTC renewed the licence of CFSL until August 31, 2016.
