2003

On January 7, the CRTC approved the application by Association communautaire fransaskoise de Gravelbourg Inc. for a broadcasting licence to operate a Type A community French-language FM radio programming undertaking in Gravelbourg. The station would operate at 93.1 MHz (channel 226LP) with an effective radiated power of 48 watts. The applicant stated that the station would broadcast 105 hours of programming in each broadcast week. Of that, 80 hours would originate with Réseau francophone d’Amérique. The remaining 25 hours would be produced by the station and would include children’s programming, newscasts, weather reports, community activity reports, information on politics, the economy and culture, and musical selections of all types. The licence would expire 31 August 2009. Given that the technical parameters approved in this decision were for a low-power unprotected FM service, the Commission reminded the licensee that it would have to select another frequency if the Department of Industry so required.

In March, the NEW CFRG 93.1 FM signed on the air. It was new because held the call letters of Gravelbourg’s original French-language station – CFRG-AM. That station was purchased by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and eventually became a full-time rebroadcast transmitter of CBKF-FM in Regina. CFRG-FM 93.1 broadcast from a room in the basement of the Maillard Cultural Centre (the Dumont Lepage studio).

By the end of the year, CFRG-FM was now a 24-hour a day operation, with 15 locally produced shows. An equal amount of programming came from other francophone community stations across Canada. CFRG was also now broadcasting on the internet.
