CFGW-FM

On June 9, the CRTC gave the GX Radio Partnership (Yorkton Broadcasting Co. Ltd. 75% and Walsh Investments Inc. 25%) approval to open an FM station on 94.1 MHz with effective radiated power or 100,000 watts. GX was the only commercial radio operator in Yorkton and owned CJGX-AM. The new FM would offer a pop, rock and dance music format.

The new station was authorized to change the location of the transmitter site as well as the effective antenna height.

Alex White, program director at CJAT-CKKC Trail, B.C., left those stations on March 16 to become PD at the new CFGW-FM Yorkton, set to sign on July 1.

CFGW-FM began broadcasting on July 1.

On October 16, CFGW was given approval to add a transmitter at Swan River, operating on 95.3 MHz with an effective radiated power of 860 watts. CFGW’s originating signal reached this area but was sporadic and could not be depended upon on a continuing basis.  CFGW-FM-1 would use an existing tower located about 13 kilometres south and east of Swan River, on Minitonas Hill. Antenna height would be 84.7 metres.

On April 2, GX Radio Partnership was given approval to add a transmitter for CFGW at Wapella, operating on 102.9 MHz with an effective radiated power of 14,000 watts. 

The CRTC approved a change in the effective control of GX Radio from Brenda and Lyle Walsh to Frederick W. Hill, through the transfer of 89% of the voting interest of the parent corporation of Walsh Investments Inc. and Yorkton Broadcasting Company Limited to Harvard Broadcasting Inc., a corporation controlled by Frederick W. Hill. GX Radio was the licensee of CJGX Yorkton, and CFGW-FM Yorkton and its transmitters CFGW-FM-1 Swan River, Manitoba and CFGW-FM-2 Wapella, Saskatchewan.

Rob McBride moved to WIRED 96.3FM Saskatoon as Station Engineer. He had been with sister Harvard stations The Fox/GX94 Yorkton.

William Alexander was the new Program Director/Morning Show Host at Fox FM. He returned to the Harvard Broadcasting fold after 10 years away, most recently as PD at community station Creek FM Balcarres. He succeeded Mark Nicholls who joined Vista Broadcasting Powell River as Assistant PD.

Angie Norton became the new Business Manager for Harvard’s Regina and Yorkton stations.

The CRTC approved the change to the effective control of Harvard Broadcasting Inc. from Frederick W. Hill to Paul J. Hill following the death of Frederick W. Hill in July 2008. Harvard was the licensee of radio stations and the parent company of two other licensees of radio stations in Alberta and Saskatchewan.

After 36 years in broadcasting, Lyle Walsh, General Manager at Harvard Broadcasting Yorkton, resigned effective December 9. He moved into real estate.

Angie Norton became general manager of GX94 and Fox FM (CFGW). The Saskatchewan Harvard Broadcasting business manager began her new role December 12, succeeding Lyle Walsh who left the business. Norton was the first female GM in the 85 year history of CJGX. 

Colin Laird became the new General Sales Manager at GX94/FOX FM September 10. He had been a marketing consultant the last 11 years with the Harvard cluster.
