2011

On November 22, Elliot Kerr (OBCI) received a licence from the CRTC to operate an English-language commercial AM radio station in Mississauga. The new station would operate at 960 kHz (class C) with a transmitter power of 2,000 watts daytime and 280 watts nighttime. Kerr proposed to offer a news/talk format dedicated to Mississauga. The station would provide Mississauga residents with local news and information, including coverage of city council, local business issues, and community related political and social events. The station would also provide sports, weather and traffic, as well as a community forum for public discourse and debate during its mid-morning program Mississauga Voices. The station would broadcast 126 hours of spoken word programming each broadcast week, of which at least 101 hours would be local. A maximum of 25 hours would be automated programming. Programming would include 28.5 hours of structured newscasts and news programs per broadcast week, 80% of which would focus on local Mississauga news stories. The licence would expire 31 August 2018.

2013

When first licensed, CKNT was required to be operational by November 22, 2013. However, in a letter dated August 29, 2013, the CRTC administratively approved an application to extend the deadline to commence operations of the station until November 22, 2015.

2014

On September 11, the CRTC approved Kerr’s application to decrease CKNT`s daytime power from 2,000 to 700 watts, to decrease the night-time power from 180 to 104 watts, and to relocate the transmitter.

2015

In a letter dated November 25, the CRTC administratively approved a second application to extend the deadline to commence the operations of CKNT until November 30, 2016.

2016

On September 30, the CRTC gave CKNT approval to change the location of the transmitter. The Commission stated that the transmitter must be operational no later than November 30, 2016.

2017

On October 19, the CRTC granted another technical change to 8159203 Canada Ltd. (Elliot Kerr), to relocate the transmitter site. The original deadline for the station to commence operations was November 22, 2013. The Commission subsequently granted three extensions to that deadline. As set out in a Commission letter dated December 23, 2016, the third and final extension would expire November 30, 2017.

2018

CKNT began on-air testing in June. The station broadcast with the originally authorized power of 2,000 watts day and 280 watts at night.

On August 21, the CRTC renewed the licence of CKNT to August 31, 2023. The station was licenced in 2011 but Commission records indicated that the station was not in operation for the majority of the licence term. This short-term renewal would allow for an earlier review of the licensee’s compliance with regulatory requirements over the course of the next licence term.

CKNT signed on the air September 4 as Sauga 960. Owner Elliott Kerr also owned local OHL team the Mississauga Steelheads and Landmark Sports Group, which operated the Mississauga Marathon.

News Talk Sauga 960 officially launched daily programming in October.
