1973

On March 27, Southern Manitoba Broadcasting Co. Ltd. was granted a licence for a new AM station at Boissevain, operating on 1220 kHz with a power of 10,000 watts day and night – directional. Southern Manitoba owned stations in Altona and Steinbach. In licensing this new station, the CRTC encouraged the company to offer some local programming so that not all material was originating from Altona.  Southern Manitoba stated that local facilities would be provided.

CJRB 1220 signed on the air later in the year as a semi-satellite of CFAM Altona. It served the southwest portion of the province, reaching the western farming communities of Brandon, Virden, Killarney, and Portage.
