On May 24, the CRTC approved an application by Jim Pattison Broadcast Group Limited Partnership for a broadcasting licence to operate a new English-language commercial FM radio station to serve Calgary. Pattison proposed to offer an Adult Album Alternative format, principally targeting female listeners from 25 to 49 years of age. All of the station’s programming would be local to the Calgary community, with the exception of 21 minutes per broadcast week, which would be devoted to the David Suzuki Report. Pattison committed to devote, by condition of licence, at least 40% of all content category 2 (Popular Music) musical selections aired during each broadcast week and between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., Monday to Friday, to Canadian selections broadcast in their entirety. The licence would expire 31 August 2018, and the station would operate on 95.3 MHz (channel 237C1) with an average effective radiated power of 36,000 watts (maximum ERP of 100,000 watts with an effective height of antenna above average terrain of 180.3 metres).

On September 11, CHPK received approval to decrease average ERP from 36,000 to 30,000 watts (maximum unchanged) and increase the EHAAT from 180.3 to 272.9 metres.

The Peak (CKPK) began testing its transmitter in March. 95.3 The Peak launched April 25.

On February 29 at 10:15 a.m., CHPK’s (The Peak) Triple A format was replaced by Country…Wild 95.3 Calgary’s New Country. The call letters changed to CKWD.
