Broadcast initially in January 2002, the TV soap opera Les poupées russes, a work by Anne Boyer and Michel d’Astous, will air for five consecutive seasons until 2007.
Les poupées Russes focused primarily on the paths of two very different families, but whose lot would be tied together by fate. Just like a Russian doll, in which one doll is set within another, the series shed one layer after another of the characters’ innermost personalities, thereby revealing to the TV audience their real motivations, as well as their true nature, which even they themselves sometimes ignored. It led the TV viewer along paths that would unexpectedly change direction and thus experience stories and events, which like the Matryoshkas, obscured or revealed something else altogether.
The setting of Les poupées Russes was the current and contemporary goings on in a small town in the Laurentians north of Montreal. The series was directed by Louise Forestier and Sylvia Turgeon.
This TV soap opera was built upon a solid and balanced cast including Marie Tifo, Normand Chouinard, Nathalie Coupal, Francis Reddy, Charles Lafortune, Monique Spazziani, Joël Miller, Marie Eykel and Sandra Dumaresq.
