When the pilot for this series aired on CBC in January 2005, the results were so satisfactory that the Corporation commissioned a first series of six episodes, which debuted on the network in January 2006. Mary Walsh (CODCO, This Hour has 22 Minutes)created, co-wrote and starred in the program as Mamie Lou Furey, matriarch of the Fureys, whose family business handled births (through baby showers), deaths (ambulance and funeral facilities) and marriages (weddings and marital agency services)) in the Newfoundland fishing village of Cat Gut Cove.
In launching the series, the CBC described Hatching, Matching and Dispatching as “follow(ing) the adventures of the Furey family and their daily dealings with the lovesick, the plain sick, the old, the infirm, the newborn, the automotively challenged, the berieved, the heartbroken, the dead and the dead drunk”.
Others in the cast were Rick Boland as patriarch Phonse Furey, Sherry White (Myrna Furey), Mark McKinney (Todd Meaney), Joel Hynes (Nick Crocker), Susan Kent (Darlene Furey) and Shaun Majumder(Cyril Pippy). Partnered with Mary Walsh in the enterprise were Mary Sexton ,and John Brunton of Insight Productions, and Ed McDonald was co-writer with Mary Walsh.
The half-hour Hatching, Matching and Dispatching series debuted on CBC on Fridays at 9pm on January 6th 2006. Six episodes were produced and telecast, and the series was repeated in the summer of 2006. It was not renewed.
