Freestyle

Network: CBC Radio

Broadcast Run: 2005 to 2007

Broadcast Medium: Radio

Aired weekdays from 2pm to 4pm on Radio One from November 2005 to April 2007. In an effort to find a “younger demographic”, CBC programmers came up with a pop music program called Freestyle. It featured Kelly Ryan and Cameron Phillips and was produced in Vancouver. This show replaced Richardson’s Roundup in the early afternoon time-slot,  but was not generally popular with critics or listeners.

Kelly Ryan, who used to be a reporter in Radio News, was the first co-host. Marsha Lederman replaced her in the fall of 2006 as Ryan returned to the News division. Self-described as “a healthy dose of the best contemporary music ever made, as well as amusing and fascinating topics and people from all over the country and around the world,” the show was cancelled in 2007 and replaced by a new Arts Magazine program hosted by Jian Ghomeshi.
