Licensed by the CRTC in 1996, this spin-off from the uniquely-styled news programming offered by Toronto’s popular CITY-TV was launched in March 1998, bringing a 24 hour service of local, national and international news, weather, traffic, stock market reports, and sports results via cable and satellite to over five million viewers in the Greater Toronto area.
The channel was originally owned by CHUM Limited. A CRTC hearing on an application by CTVglobemedia to acquire the assets of CHUM Limited was held on April 30th 2007. Among the CHUM assets acquired by CTVglobemedia in the final approved deal were seven television stations, some 33 radio stations, and 21 specialty channels, including CP24.
On January 19th 2010, CP 24 responded to CITY-TV’S cutback in its afternoon newscasts in the Toronto area two days earlier, by adding two new half-hour news programs at 5:00 and 5:30 p.m.
On March 19, 2011, CP24 introduced a weekend edition of CP24 Breakfast (7:00-10:15 a.m.). Following CRTC approval, BCE acquired 100% of CTVglobemedia (BCE had been a minority partner) on April 1, 2010. CTVglobemedia was rebranded as Bell Media.
Between March 26, 2009 and April 13, 2011, CP24 was simulcast on CHUM-AM 1050 in Toronto.
The channel began broadcasting in HD on September 27, 2012.
