On June 22nd 2010, CTVglobemedia announced their intention to rebrand their TV Land specialty channel as Comedy Gold, a channel to be dedicated to paying tribute to “…the tireless sitcoms of the 70s, 80s and 90s”.
Titles confirmed for inclusion in the new channel’s schedules were The Mary Tyler Moore Show, The Bob Newhart Show, Newhart, Murphy Brown, Night Court, SCTV and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, with new titles to follow.
The new channel launched on August 2nd 2010.
On July 9, 2018, the CRTC approved the application by WOW! Unlimited Networks to acquire Comedy Gold from Bell Media for $6.8 million. WOW! planned to rebrand the service to cater to children’s and youth programming.
After taking ownership of the channel in 2019, Wow Unlimited Media received CRTC approval on February 5, 2021 to have the licence revoked. COVID-19 and the growing dominance of online media were among the reasons cited for the closure.
