The wide availability of CNN in the early 1980s prompted both private and public Canadian broadcasters to apply for a licence for a similar 24-hour news service in Canada. In 1987 the CRTC awarded such a license to the CBC, and CBC Newsworld began broadcasting in the summer of 1989, as Canada’s first 24-hour news channel. In addition to live newscasts, the channel provides many public affairs series and documentaries, and the CBC has also utilized the channel for carriage of overflow events from the Olympics when space/time was not available on the parent network. CBC Newsworld funding is kept separate from the parent company, and comes primarily from cable subscriber fees and the sale of advertising. CBC Newsworld was relaunched as CBC News Network on October 26, 2009.
