After Four

Network: CTV Television Network

Broadcast Run: 1966 to 1968

Broadcast Medium: Television

A regular teenage section in the Toronto Telegram spawned this half-hour Saturday afternoon series. Its regular hosts were Carole Taylor (later to be one of the first hosts of Canada AM, and later still the Chairman of the CBC) and Johnny F. Bassett, one of three sons of television and then newspaper magnate John F. Bassett. Johnny was responsible for the Telegram features, and successfully brought many elements from the newspaper to the small screen.

Oriented to the teenage market, the show featured Gordon Lightfoot as a frequent guest, and introduced Joni Mitchell in one of her earliest TV appearances. Groups such as The Bells and The Carnival (later to be used successfully to provide all the music for CTV’s fall program launch in 1968) were also seen on the show. After Four began as a local show on CFTO Toronto in 1964, but had a two-year run on the Network on Saturday afternoons at 4:00pm (when else?) from September 1966 to September 1968.
