Having sold his Witness to Yesterday series to Global, Patrick Watson cast around early in 1974 for new program ideas to offer to the fledgling Ontario network. The result was a daily half-hour show titled This Program Is About Sex, for which Watson acted as Executive Producer, and Charlotte Gobeil as producer. It was hosted by American psychologist and sex educator Sol Gordon.
Each program began with a comedy sketch illustrating the theme of that day’s show, enacted by resident performers who included Chuck Weir and Jean Templeton. Some of the subjects covered were birth control, promiscuity, nudity in the home and language and sexuality.
At the time, Global were having financial problems, and the series was short-lived, but Watson reported in his book This Hour Has Seven Decades that his production company, Immedia Ltd, got “….a sufficient percentage of what we were owed to pay our costs….” Those costs included the rental of studio facilities at CJOH-TV, Ottawa, where the series was produced.
