Story Tellers

Network: CTV Television Network

Broadcast Run: 1997 to 2000

Broadcast Medium: Television

In 1996 Baton Broadcasting, owners of CTV Toronto affiliate CFTO, and Electrohome, owners of CKCO-TV Kitchener, made a joint application for a licence for a new station in Vancouver. Their application was granted in January 1997.  A condition of the licence was that a series of half-hour dramas would be commissioned from independent producers in B.C. under the umbrella title The Storytellers.

Later that year, as part of Baton’s application to acquire the assets of the Atlantic Television system (ATV), and thereby acquire effective control of the CTV Network, there was a further undertaking to commission at least six half-hour dramas from independent producers on the East Coast.  These, too, would be under the Storytellers umbrella.

Ten episodes were produced in Vancouver.  Titles included The Orangeseed Myth (and Other Lies Mother Told Me), Eyes of a Cowboy, Smudge, 10,000 Delusions, A Feeling Called Glory, Legends: The Story of Siwash Rock, Karaoke Queen, So, and The Genius.  These were broadcast on various dates and times across the Network between October 1997 and June 1999.  Three were commissioned in Atlantic Canada between 1998 and 2000: Shelter, Daily Blade and Little Buck’s Christmas.
