The CBC had always wanted to create a daytime drama, aka soap opera, on the network. Country Joy was another such production whose television life was cut short before an audience could grow attached to it.
Produced in Edmonton, Country Joy invited viewers into the lives of the people of Coronet, Alberta, a fictional town in the north. The principal story surrounded Dick Brugencate and his second wife, Joy Burnham, hence the title. Unfortunately, Dick’s two teenager children didn’t like their foster mother. In fact, she didn’t have the approval of Dick’s mother either. So unfolded the trials and tribulations of Country Joy.
