The author Janette Bertrand wrote this TV soap opera that would become a big hit on Radio-Canada from 1976 to 1979. Featuring her husband Jean Lajeunesse, who played the grandfather Charles-Henri Lamontagne, the March 6, 1979 episode of Grand-papa was seen by an audience of 2,737,000 viewers, while its average audience rating during this season was 2,208,000 TV viewers. From 1975 to 1979, Radio-Canada aired 115 episodes of Grand-papa. This TV soap opera was directed by Aimé Forget, Geneviève Houle and Lucile Leduc.

Charles-Henri Lamontagne, a watchmaker by trade, was an authoritarian and proud man who never admitted to any of his faults. A widower, he had a tendency to want to rule over the lives of the people around him: his children, his in-laws, etc. He acted as if they were all still his children. Obviously, this didn’t make everybody happy. Inevitably, conflicts arose and Charles-Henri sometimes had a lot of difficulty resolving them.
