Other Voices

Network: CBC Television Network

Broadcast Run: 1964 to 1965

Broadcast Medium: Television

Aired Tuesday nights at 10:30 for two seasons, October to December 1964 and from April to June, 1965

This public affairs program succeeded Horizon on the network, for two 12-week runs.

Its purpose was to explore and document social issues not usually covered on television. For example, one of the programs took a look at youth culture, namely, the Mods and Rockers of England. Another camera crew went into a native Reserve in North Battleford, Saskatchewan, with host Don Francks. He lived on the reserve for several weeks in order to tell the inside story.

Other programs explored the cult of mediocrity, Marshall Mcluhan, a Quebec Minority report, a drama called Put Them All Together, English writer Wyndham Lewis, Leni Riefenstahl, Frederick Varley, Two Kinds of Christmas, Timmins, Ontario mining town, Every Tenth Man: a study of homosexuality, and the Songs of Joe Hill. Considering the subsequent success of shows like This Hour Has Seven Days, Other Voices was of its time and a solid addition to the schedule.
