Starting in the 2008-09 season, and renewed in June 2009 for the Fall, 16:9 (the title refers to the ratio of high-definition television pictures) featured host Mary Garafolo leading a team of award-winning reporters in pursuit of the stories behind the headlines, and providing profiles of Canadians who had made their marks in all walks of life.

 On June 1st 2010 Canwest announced that 16:9 would be returning to the Global schedule in the Fall.

The series was originally scheduled on Sunday evenings, 6:30 – 7:00pm, but later moved to Saturdays at the same time, and was retitled 16:9: The Bigger Picture.

On May 31st 2011, Global announced that 16 x 9: The Bigger Picture would be in their schedule for a fourth season, on Saturdays at 7:00 pm, effective with the Fall of 2011.   On September 8th, Global announced that the program would be expanded to a full hour for the new season.

On May 30th 2012 Canwest announced that 16 x 9: The Bigger Picture would be returning to the Global fall schedule on Fridays, 10:00 – 11:00 pm.  The series continued through the 2015-16 season, but early in 2016 Global was acquired by Corus Entertainment Inc., and on June 28th 2016 the 16 x 9 cast and crew were stunned to learn that the series had been cancelled after eight successful seasons, as “a business decision”.  Current host Carolyn Jarvis “would remain at the network as its chief investigative correspondent”.
