1979

On February 13, Paul J. Audette, on behalf of a company to be incorporated, was awarded a licnec to operate a new FM station at Chicoutimi. The station would broadcast on a frequency of 96.7 MHz with effective radiated power of 28,600 watts. The applicant had originally proposed to operate with an ERP of 25,400 watts. Competing applications by Liliane Marcil (25,600 watts on 96.7 MHz) and Jacques Sebag (1340 kHz at Jonquiere) were denied. A realistic proposal together with Audette’s extensive experience and knowledge of the area were decisive factors in the granting of the licence to him.

CJAB-FM began broadcasting on May 25.

1981

On November 5, CJAB was authorized to add a rebroadcast transmitter at Chambord. It would use a frequency of 95.5 MHz with an effective radiated power of 3,240 watts. CJAB-FM is to provide coverage of events in the Lac St-Jean area.

1983

On July 25, CJAB-FM Inc. was given approval to change frequency from 96.7 MHz to 94.5 MHz, increase effective radiated power from 28,600 watts to 56,000 watts, and to move the transmitter site to Mount Valin. With these technical changes, CJAB would be able to also serve Chambord from the main transmitter site and would not need the earlier authorized rebroadcast transmitter.

1984

On January 11, the CRTC renewed CJAB-FM’s licence until September 30, 1985.

1985

On December 20, approval was given for the transfer of effective control of CJAB-FM Inc., through the transfer of 1,000 Class A voting shares and 4,000 Class B non-voting shares from Gestion P. J. Audette Inc. to Radio Saguenay Ltée, which would now hold all of the shares of CJAB-FM Inc. Radio Saguenay Ltée also owned CKRS-AM Jonquière.

1987

CJAB was granted (December 1) a decrease in effective radiated power from 56,000 watts to 44,200 watts. CJAB’s tower was noted as being at Mont Valin.

1989

On June 21, CJAB had its licence renewed and it was authorized to broadcast 63 hours of locally-produced automated programming weekly, between 6 a.m. and midnight. The automation system would permit program hosts or on-duty news staff to interrupt the programming at any time.

1992

On August 21, the CRTC approved an application by CJAB-FM Inc. to transfer 100% of its issued and outstanding common voting shares from Radio Saguenay Ltée. to Radiomutuel Inc. Radiomutuel would subsequently amalgamate with CJAB-FM Inc. At the same time, an application by 165561 Canada Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Radiomutuel to acquire CKRS Jonquière, currently owned by Radio Saguenay Ltée, was also approved.

On February 6, Radiomutuel inc. received permission to acquire CJAB-FM from CJAB-FM inc. as part of an intra-corporate reorganization.

2000

On January 12, approval was granted for Radiomutuel inc. to transfer effective control and ownership of its broadcasting undertakings from Radiomutuel to Astral Communications inc.

The ultimate would continue to be exercised by Astral Media, owned by the Greenberg family.

On October 21 the CRTC renewed CJAB-FM’s licence until August 31, 2010.

2009

In August, Astral’s chain of “Energie FM” stations changed their name to “NRJ” (pronounced Energie in French). The change was part of a licensing deal with NRJ-FM in France.

2010

On November 30, the CRTC renewed CJAB’s licence until August 31, 2017.
