CJWV-FM

On May 8, the CRTC approved the application by Pineridge Broadcasting Inc. for a broadcasting licence to operate a new English-language commercial FM radio programming undertaking in Peterborough. The station would broadcast on 96.7 MHz (channel 244B) with an effective radiated power 13,000 watts and offer a Mainstream Adult Contemporary format with a target audience of 25-54 year olds, skewed to women; core: 35-54 years; median age: 45. 120 hours of local programming would be offered in each broadcast week. The licence would expire August 31, 2014. The Commission noted that although the signals of Pineridge’s two Cobourg stations CHUC-FM and CKSG-FM would overlap with its proposed Peterborough FM station, Pineridge would not be in breach of its Common Ownership Policy, as Pineridge would not own three stations in the same “market” as defined in the Radio Regulations. Given the size of the BBM-defined market for Cobourg as compared to the 3mV/m contour of the stations, the Commission determined that the market for each station involved was defined as the BBM central area, which in this case was distinct for Peterborough and Cobourg-Northumberland County.

Magic 96.7 (CJWV-FM) began on-air Industry Canada tests on May 11 with 10,000 songs in a row.

Studios and offices were downtown, at Peterborough Square. Joel Scott was operations manager. Dan Duran and Linda Kash hosted the morning show. Sue Tyler was mid-day host. Mike Cutting handled afternoon drive and was assistant program director. The newsroom included: Mike Judson (news director), Craig Powers and Deb Crossen. 

CJWV-FM officially signed on the air at 6:00 a.m. on June 7.

When Magic 96.7 launched, program director and morning show host Dan Duran and co-host Linda Kash communicated via Skype from Budapest. She was in Hungary filming a miniseries. It should be noted that Kash was also the angel in the Philadelphia Cream Cheese TV commercials. 

Lots of changes at Pineridge Broadcasting stations: Deb Crossen was now with Magic 96.7 Peterborough in mornings as News Anchor, joining Dan Duran and Linda Kash; Charlie Toner, who began with Pineridge as a cruiser driver but whose training and background was in technical and engineering, was now Director of Engineering; and York Bell-Smith added more programming duties and an on-air shift to his Promotions Director/Assistant Program Director role at STAR 93.3 Cobourg. He now oversaw programming on a day-to-day basis at both STAR 93.3 and 107.9 The BREEZE. He was also doing middays at The Breeze.

On June 16, a deal was announced that would see the sale of Pineridge Broadcasting Inc. (CHUC/CKSG Cobourg and CJWV Peterborough) to My Broadcasting Corp. My already owned CJMB 90.5 Sports Extra in Peterborough. With the addition of CJWV, My would now have two stations in the city.

On July 16, the CRTC administratively approved the change to the ownership and effective control of Pineridge Broadcasting Inc., from Donald T. Conway to My Broadcasting Corporation, a corporation jointly controlled by Jon Pole and Andrew Dickson through their respective family trusts. For the record, Dave Hughes (was the general sales manager) and Douglas Kirk (Durham Radio) were also involved in the ownership of Pineridge Broadcasting while Blackburn Radio of London had an ownership interest in My Broadcasting.

My Broadcasting took control of Pineridge on September 1.

On September 2, CJWV-FM moved from Adult Contemporary (Magic 96.7) to Oldies as Oldies 96.7. The first song played under the new format was “Start Me Up” by The Rolling Stones.
