On January 20, the CRTC approved the application by 5777152 Manitoba Ltd. for a broadcasting licence to operate an English-language commercial FM radio programming undertaking in Neepawa. The company was owned and controlled by its sole shareholder and director William Gade. The company also owned CJSB-FM Swan River and CJIE-FM Gimli. The station would operate at 97.1 MHz (channel 246A) with an effective radiated power of 3,200 watts. The licence would expire August 31, 2016. The new station would offer a blended music format featuring country (60%) and pop and rock (40%) music. In each broadcast week, the station would also provide at least 75 hours of local programming including 18 hours of local spoken word programming of which 8 hours and 8 minutes would be devoted to pure news. Half of the newscasts would be local new stories.
CJBP-FM “CJ 97.1 – The Voice of the Heartland” signed on the air April 10 with a Country format. The B and P in the call sign represented “Beautiful Plains.” Studios and offices were located at 290 Davidson Street in Neepawa. The transmitter was on the Manitoba Hydro Tower, east of Neepawa.
