CFTK-AM

J. Fred Weber, OBCI, received approval to operate an AM station at Terrace – on 1140 kHz with power of 1,000 watts. CFTK signed on the air later in the year. The corporate name was Skeena Broadcasters Ltd.

CFTK Television began broadcasting.

CFTK was given approval to move from 1140 to 590 kHz with power of 1,000 watts.

Skeena Broadcasters opened CKTK Kitimat, operating on 1230 kHz with a power of 1,000 watts day and 250 watts night. CKTK offered programming from its own studios and from CFTK.

CHTK in Prince Rupert began operations.

CJFW-FM Terrace signed on.

On February 6, the CRTC approved the application to amend the licence for CHTK by changing the program source from studios located at Prince Rupert to part-time from studios located at Prince Rupert and part-time from studios located at Terrace. The Commission noted that Prince Rupert listeners would detect little change in the programming available to them. Both CHTK and CFTK Terrace featured “Top 40” music and carried the same syndicated presentations on Saturday. The licensee regarded the establishment of a network as a cost-effective step which would hopefully improve the quality of the evening programming on CHTK and CFTK and enable CHTK to provide a better local news and public affairs service.

The corporate name changed to Okanagan Skeena Group Limited. 

Gurmeet Sing joined CFTK as marketing co-ordinator. Sing had been with CKLG/CFOX Vancouver.

Rick Webber returned to CFTK-AM-TV/CJFW-FM as news director.

Judith Grimley was general manager. 

Tom Christie left the Okanagan Skeena Group at Terrace to become general sales manager at CKTB in St. Catharines, ON

Marg Van Herd passed away. She had been with Skeena Broadcasters for nearly 30 years until her retirement in November of 1992. Van Herd had been accountant/controller/VP, finance, and general historian, prior to and for a period after, the amalgamation of the company with Okanagan Holdings Ltd.

Okanagan Skeena Group Ltd. was purchased by Telemedia Radio Inc. 

Rod Sterling left CFTK-CHTK-CKTK-CJFW where he was program director. He would be replaced by Craig Ellis who joined Telemedia West at Terrace from CJCI Prince George where he had been morning man for ten years.

Doug Anderson was now general manager. He had been operations manager at CFQX Winnipeg.

Standard Radio Inc. purchased the Western and Ontario operations of Telemedia. Some stations were then sold to other companies but SRI retained the Okanagan Skeena group.
 
On December 12, CKTK Kitimat was given approval to move to FM.

On September 27, Astral Media Radio G.P. received CRTC approval to acquire the assets of the radio and TV undertakings owned by Standard Radio Ltd., subject to certain conditions.  The purchase included CFTK-AM.  

CFTK (The Mix) celebrated its 50th birthday on July 30. The station’s actual birthday was August 1 but the party was held on July 30 to coincide with the kickoff of Riverboat Days…holding a barbecue, Jail & Bail fundraiser and several large birthday cakes. 

Rob Williamson was the new Program Director/Radio Operations Manager at Astral Media Radio Terrace. Williamson’s background included a stint at AM740 Toronto and United Nations Radio.

Janine Kraft waas promoted to Program Director/Radio Operations Manager at Astral Radio BC Northwest in Terrace. She’d held the interim position for the past eight months and officially began September 1. Also at Astral Terrace, Engineer Brian Sayewich resigned effective September 10.

On August 31, the CRTC administratively renewed the licence for CFTK until March 31, 2012. 

Astral Radio and Television BC North rebranded their Mix stations in Terrace, Kitimat and Prince Rupert to ezROCK and there was an AM to FM flip of CHTK in Prince Rupert. The events included parties in Terrace and Prince Rupert over a two day period. 

Roy McKenzie, the regional sales manager for Astral’s B.C. Interior stations, was no longer with the company. His position was eliminated.

On March 20, the CRTC administratively renewed the licence for CFTK to August 31, 2012. On July 10, the CRTC administratively renewed the licence for CFTK to March 31, 2013. 

Janine Kraft, Brand Director at Astral Radio BC North, worked her last day there October 4. Kraft had been with the operation for the past 11 years, the last two as BD. She left for opportunities outside broadcasting. 

Grant Scott joined Astral Radio Terrace November 15 as Brand Director.

On February 6, the CRTC administratively renewed CFTK’s licence to August 31, 2013. 

On June 27, 2013, after a previous such application had been denied in 2012, the CRTC approved an application by Astral Media Inc. to sell its pay and specialty television channels, conventional television stations and radio stations to BCE Inc., including CFTK.
