CTV had run the British-produced Avengers series, 1967-69, and were obvious potential customers when a French producer persuaded the original Avengers producer-writer Brian Clemens to revive the program, imaginatively titled The New Avengers. Toward the end of the production cycle, Canadian production company Nielsen-Ferns was prevailed upon to get Canadian sales for the series, and in return for a Canadian licensing deal with CTV, four of the final episodes were shot in Canada.
For the four shows with Canadian locations, Patrick Macnee and his two sidekicks, who were played by Joanna Lumley (later to gain fame for her performances in Absolutely Fabulous) and Gareth Hunt, were supported by a who’s who from the ACTRA talent lists, including Harvey Atkin, Jane Mallett, Jack Creley, Marilyn Lightstone, Cec Linder, Jan Rubes, Jack Duffy, August Schellenberg and boxer George Chuvalo.
The one-hour series was scheduled on the network on Thursdays at 10:00pm in the spring and summer of 1977.
