In this program, that traced its roots back to a program first produced in 1978, in cooperation with the Community of French-Language Television Programmes, lucky globetrotters would be selected for a six-month adventure and initially flown to Paris where they would then leave for a country of their choice.
The participants then had to check in regularly by sending back snippets of films they had shot to a jury called upon to evaluate their work. After an absence lasting a few years, La Course resumed in 1988, but only covered the Americas. The following year, the competition expanded its horizons to include the Americas and Africa, and in 1990, Europe and Asia.
In 1991, La Course reclaimed its planetary dimension and became La course destination monde. The participants travelled far and wide and visited different regions of the world on their own, armed with a small video camera, and shot various kinds of four minute segments: documentaries, editorials, dramas or reports. The series, which ended in 1999, paved the way for the development of several promising young directors.
