Following the conclusion of his very successful comedy series Corner Gas, writer-comedian Brent Butt was immediately hard at work developing a new series, Hiccups, which would star his wife and fellow Corner Gas star Nancy Robertson.
Set in Vancouver, Hiccups had Nancy Robertson playing Millie Upton, a children’s author with anger issues. Her emotional quirks contributed to her success as an author, but made living in the real world with actual people a bit of a challenge. Though she was generally an upbeat and happy person, Millie often experienced “hiccups” – raging episodes, fits of depression or euphoric highs – at the drop of a hat. After finally being convinced that she needed help, Millie impulsively enlisted the aid of a life coach, Stan Dirko, played by Brent Butt. It was just unfortunate that Stan had no training or credentials. Millie and Stan were like the lost leading the lost, with the best of intentions, and little success. Hiccups series regulars included Laura Soltis as Millie’s publisher, Joyce, David Ingram as her agent Ingram, Emily Perkins as Crystal, the receptionist, and Paula Rivera as Stan’s wife Anna .
The show debuted on CTV on March 1st 2010, back-to back with Dan for Mayor, a new sitcom written by Corner Gas writers Mark Farrell, Paul Mather and Kevin White, and starring Corner Gas cast member Fred Ewanuik.
Hiccups was produced by Sparrow Media in association with CTV and The Comedy Network. Brent Butt was creator, writer, show runner and executive producer. Executive producers were Laura Lightbown and David Storey (who also directed numerous episodes). Producers were Nancy Robertson and Arvi Liimatainen .The Director of Photography was Ken Krawczyk, and the Production Designer was Matthew Budgeon.
After a brief late spring hiatus, Hiccups returned with new episodes on Mondays at 8 pm, starting on June 7th 2010. A few days earlier, CTV had announced that the series had been renewed, to start sometime in the 2011-2012 season.
On May 9th 2011, CTV announced that Hiccups would return to the schedule on Monday, May 30th, before moving to Sundays at 8.30 pm on June 19th.
In September, the media reported that Hiccups had been cancelled.
