Originally titled Search and Rescue, The Guard was a 13-part, one-hour action drama series depicting the lives of four members of the Canadian Coast Guard’s Search and Rescue team, operating in the Pacific Northwest.
Shot in Squamish, B.C., the series was created by Raymond Storey and produced by Stephen Hegyes, Charles Bishop, Ray Storey, Shawn Williamson and Gigi Boyd of Brightlight Pictures, in cooperation with Halifax Film.
The series starred Steve Basic as Duty Captain Miro Da Silva, Jeremy Guilbaut as Rescue Specialist Andrew Vanderlee, Zoie Palmer as Rescue Specialist Carlye Greig and Claudette Mink as Rescue Specialist Laura Nelson. Recurring guest character David Nelson was played by David James Elliot, seen previously on JAG and Closer to Home.
Originally planned for scheduling in the Spring of 2008, the series was moved up to a January 22nd 2008 debut when the U.S. writers’ strike made new episodes of several regular American series unavailable. The series was scheduled on Tuesday, 10:00 – 11:00pm, immediately following Global’s hit show House.
The Guard returned for a new season on October 29th 2008, and in June 2009, after 22 episodes had been broadcast, CanWest Media announced that The Guard would be returning for a third season. However, it did not do so, and no further episodes were produced.
