ESPN Classic Canada went on the air September 7, 2001, after receiving CRTC approval the previous November. The channel was controlled by CTV but ESPN in the U.S. held a 20% interest. The name of the channel was later changed to ESPN Classic. As a condition of licence, ESPN Classic could not show sporting events until at least 18 months after their original broadcast.
