Brown, Donald (1933- )
A true native Cape Bretoner, born in North Sydney, Nova Scotia, Donald Brown, lived in Sydney Mines Nova Scotia since the age of seven.
Don was educated in the Nova Scotia School System and graduated in 1951. He had worked his way through the ranks of Canada Packers Limited when, in 1962, he was appointed Assistant Manager of their Sydney operations.
In 1966, he joined CJCB Radio, owned by the Nathanson family. Don was appointed General Sales Manager in 1972, and then in 1983, Station Manager.
In 1990, CJCB/AM and CKPE-FM, were purchased by Fundy Cable Ltd of Saint John, New Brunswick. With the take-over, Fundy appointed Don as General Manager. In 1992, he received additional responsibilities, and was named Vice-President Radio Operations in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.
On becoming a broadcaster, Don Brown served the industry as
Senior Director of the Atlantic Association of Broadcasters (AAB) and was President for the term 1995-96. A member of the Canadian Association of Broadcasters (CAB) Quarter-Century Club, he also was made a Director of Marconi Towers Foundation.
Active in a wide range of community affairs, Don became a
Director of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation Board and the North Sydney Forum Association – a Member of the Downtown Development Corporation of Sydney and the Cape Breton Tourist Association.
Among other involvements:
the Human Resources Canada Centre for Students (Job Placement Campaign)
awarding scholarships to the Northside Victoria and Cape Breton District School Board for students planning to further their education in broadcasting.
Upon entering his 33rd year in broadcasting, Donald Brown was inducted into the CAB Broadcast Hall of Fame.
