On December 23, the CRTC approved the application by Corporation de radio Kushapetsheken Apetuamiss Uashat for a broadcasting licence for a Montagnais- and French-language FM radio programming undertaking at Maliotenam, on the frequency 104.5 MHz (channel 283), with an effective radiated power of 50 watts, and a transmitter at Sept-Iles, on the frequency 90.1 MHz (channel 211), with an effective radiated power of 0.6 watts. The licence would expire on August 31, 1999. The applicant planned to broadcast 109 hours per week of programming of which 96 hours and 30 minutes would be local and 12 hours and 30 minutes would originate from the Société de communication Attikamekw Montagnais (SOCAM) network. Of the local programming, 92 hours and 30 minutes would be in Montagnais and 4 hours in French.

CKAU-FM and its rebroadcaster signed on the air and was known as The Voice of Uashat Mak Mani-Utenam. For the record, the licensee was founded in February of 1981.
2014
On September 15, the CRTC approved a change to the authorized contours of Radio KAU by increasing the average effective radiated power from 50 to 6,000 watts (non-directional antenna with an effective height of Antenna above average terrain increasing from 21 to 65 meters).
