CJTK-FM

Curtis Belcher and Eternacom Inc. applied for a new FM station at Sudbury. They proposed a Christian music format with at least 95% of the music being non-classical religious.

On June 6, Eternacom Inc. was granted a licence for a new Christian music FM station, operating on a frequency of 95.5 MHz with an effective radiated power of 35 watts.

CJTK began broadcasting later in the year. Studios and offices were at 430 Notre Dame, Suite 210.

On September 23, approval was granted for an increase in effective radiated power for CJTK from 35 to 1,400 watts, and the relocation of the trnasmitter to a site 3.7 kilometres north-west of the present site.

On September 13, CJTK was granted a rebroadcast transmitter at North Bay, operating on 89.5 MHz  with an effective radiated power of 33 watts. This transmitter went on the air later in the year.

In the fall, CJTK Sudbury began broadcasting with 1,400 watts, using a new transmitter.

On August 11, Eternacom Inc. was given permission to operate a specialty commercial FM station in North Bay that would broadcast Christian music. The new station would replace CJTK-FM-1, a rebroadcast transmitter of CJTK-FM Sudbury. The new North Bay station would operate on 103.5 MHz with an effective radiated power of 800 watts. Antenna height at the existing site would be decreased from 70 to 61.4 metres. When the new station launches, CJTK-FM-1 (89.5 MHz) would be deleted.

Proposed North Bay studios would be at 1250 Cassells. Sudbury studios are now noted as being at 417 Notre Dame.

On December 5, CJTK was given approval to add a transmitter at Little Current, operating on 102.1 MHz with an effective radiated power of 1,300 watts. Antenna height would be 127.9 metres.

CJTK-FM-2 went in to operation at Little Current in the summer.

Eternacom Inc. received approval to change the authorized contours of CJTK-FM by increasing effective radiated power from 1,400 watts to 8,100 watts. A number of years ago, the Province of Ontario made the city of Sudbury amalgamate with most of the outlying communities, creating the new city of Greater Sudbury. The CJTK power increase was needed so that the station could serve all of the new city.

On May 16, Eternacom received approval for a Christian music FM station at Elliot Lake. It would broadcast with an effective radiated power of 865 watts on a frequency of 102.5 MHz. It would broadcast no less than 42 hours of local programming per week with the remainder originating with CJTK-FM. 

In August CJTK changed its name from K95.5 to KFM (including CJTK-1 103.5 North Bay, CJTK-2 102.1 Little Current, and CJTK-3 102.5 Elliot Lake).

On August 31, the CRTC administratively renewed the licence for CJTK-FM-1 North Bay until March 31, 2012.

After 21 years at CKAT (North Bay), morning host Dean Belanger resigned. He moved on to work at 103.5 KFM North Bay.

On December 6, the CRTC approved the application by Eternacom Inc. to amend the licence for CJTK-FM-1 North Bay, in order to add an FM transmitter at Mattawa. The transmitter would operate at 93.9 MHz (channel 230LP) with an effective radiated power of 50 watts (non-directional antenna with an effective height of antenna above average terrain of -21 metres). Given that the technical parameters approved in this decision were for a low-power unprotected FM service, the Commission also reminded the licensee that it would have to select another frequency if the Department of Industry so required.

On March 20, the CRTC administratively renewed the licence for CJTK-FM-1 North Bay, and its FM transmitter in Mattawa to August 31, 2012. 

On August 28, the CRTC administratively renewed the licence of CJTK-FM-1 North Bay and its FM transmitter in Mattawa to December 31, 2012.

On March 30, the CRTC approved CJTK’s application to add a transmitter at Timmins. It would provide Timmins residents with a Christian radio service originating from Sudbury, and operate on 105.5 MHz (channel 288A) with an ERP of 800 watts (non-directional with EHAAT of 61.4 metres).

In February, CJTK-FM-5 began broadcasting in Timmins.

On June 19, the CRTC approved CJTK’s applications to add new transmitters at Iroquois Falls (105.9 MHz 540 watts 15.1 metres non-directional), Sault Ste. Marie (106.5 MHz 2,300 watts 21 metres non-directional), Englehart (105.7 MHz 5,100 watts 73.2 metres non-directional), New Liskeard (100.9 MHz 530 watts -32.1 metres non-directional), Sundridge (98.3 MHz 540 watts 12.2 metres non-directional), and Spring Bay (104.9 MHz 530 watts 26.3 metres non-directional).

CJTK 106.5 Sault Ste. Marie signed on the air September 27.

In January, CJTK-FM-9 98.3 Sundridge, CJTK-FM-10 104.9 Spring Bay and CJTK-FM-11 105.9 Iroquois Falls, signed on the air.

On August 16, the CRTC approved an application by Eternacom Inc. on behalf of Harvest Ministries Sudbury, for authority to acquire from Eternacom the assets of CJTK-FM Sudbury, CJTK FM-1 North Bay and CJTK-FM-3 Elliot Lake, and their rebroadcasting transmitters.

In August, CJTK-FM-5 Timmins was given CRTC approval to increase power from 800 to 1,400 watts, raise antenna height, and relocate the transmitter.

On November 26, the CRTC approved CJTK’s application to decrease the ERP of CJTK-FM-7 Englehart from 5,100 to 3,400 watts and the EHAAT from 73.2 to 44.5 metres.
