CJCD-AM

On March 20, Charles A. Dent (on behalf of a company to be incorporated), received approval to operate a new AM station at Yellowknife. It would operate on a frequency of 1240 kHz with a power of 1,000 watts day and night. It would be the first private commercial radio service in the community. Charles Dent was the executive assistant to the mayor of Yellowknife. The CRTC ruled that advertising on the local cable TV system must cease when the new station goes on the air.
 
CJCD 1240 began broadcasting on November 13.

The CRTC approved the transfer of control of CJCD Radio Ltd. to Charles Dent (50%) and Yellowknife Broadcasters Ltd. (50%). 

On October 9, CJCD was granted an increase in night power from 1,000 to 4,000 watts.

On February 21, the CRTC approved the application for a licence for an English-language FM radio station at Hay River on the frequency 100.1 MHz, channel 261, with an effective radiated power off 300 watts to rebroadcast the programs of CJCD Yellowknife. The licence would expire on September 30, 1990.

CJCD-FM-1 Hay River began operations on September 15.

Dick Peplow became manager of CJCD. The station’s president Charles Dent was now a full-time member of the Northwest Territories legislature.

John Clark became Program Director of CJCD. He had held the same post at CKOR in Penticton. 

On January 30, CJCD 1240 was granted a conversion to the FM dial, operating on a frequency of 100.1 MHz, with an effective radiated power of 400 watts. 

Michael Blakely became Program Director at CJCD Mix 100.

CJCD Mix 100 moved to new studios and offices (5103-51st Street) in October to help mark its 25th anniversary on November 13.

Vista Broadcast Group Inc. received approved to purchase CJCD Radio Ltd. from the Dent family. Vista would amalgamate CJCD Radio Ltd. with its subsidiary, Vista Radio Ltd. Following the amalgamation the two companies would continue as Vista Radio Ltd.

In August, Jay “Jay Bear” Boast was named music director at Mix 100. Jay has been with the station for a couple of years.

On August 26, the CRTC renewed the licence for CJCD-FM Yellowknife and its transmitter CJCD-FM-1 Hay River, from 1 September 2010 to 31 August 2014. This short-term renewal would enable the Commission to review, at an earlier date, the licensee’s compliance with the Radio Regulations, 1986.

Mix 100’s new program director and morning show host was J.C. Coutts. He had been with CKNX-FM in Wingham. Craig Richenback became news and sports reporter/anchor. Janel Steeper joined Mix 100 as a full-time admin/swing announcer. She had been with CIBU-FM in Wingham. Janel’s first day was September 26th. James McCarthy rejoined the team as news director, succeeding Natasha Riebe who moved within Vista Radio to Duncan, B.C. Jay Bear (Jason Boast) added the title of assistant program director to his role which already included music director and afternoon host. 

CJCD/Mix 100 general manager Eileen Dent announced the promotion of Jason Boast to the position of program director effective March 1. Jay started with Mix 100 in the fall of 2007 and worked his way up through the ranks. 

J.C. Coutts moved from Mix 100 to become program director and operations manager at sister Vista Broadcast station, 104.7 FREE FM Grand Prairie. His first day was March 2. Kevin MacDonald, the morning show co-host at 97.7 the Beach (Wasaga Beach, moved to join Mix 100 as morning host/assistant program director in mid-March. Music director/ assistant program director/host, Jay Boast was promoted to PD at Mix 100 Yellowknife. He’d been with the station for four years.

It was announced that Vista President Terry Coles would move into retirement at the end of 2012 and immediately into a consulting role with the company. His successor would be CEO Margot Micallef who would handle the dual roles of President/CEO. Bryan Edwards moves to Senior VP of Business Development. Vista Kelowna General Manager/General Sales Manager Ross Hawse would become the Director Western Operations. Gary Russell, Vista’s Director of Systems and GM of Vista Prince George, would integrate Haliburton and Vista in Ontario as the Director of Integration and Operations, Vista East. Co-Founder/Executive VP Paul Mann would add Senior VP of Sales and Training and Development to his duties. Assisting him would be Tracey Gard, the GM/GSM of the Cariboo Group of Vista stations, as Director Vista Sales, West and based in Courtenay. The former finance executive at Corus and Telemedia, Chris Lecomte joined Vista as Senior VP/CFO, based in Toronto.

The CRTC approved a change to the effective control of Vista Radio Ltd. from a control exercised by its board of directors to a control exercised by Westerkirk Capital Inc., a corporation controlled by Thomson Investments Limited. Vista Radio Ltd. was the licensee of radio programming undertakings located in British Columbia, Alberta and the Northwest Territories.

John McFadden was the new News Director at Mix 100. His background included 12 years in Toronto (CBC-TV/SUN News Network/CP24/Citytv) and, before that, CHEX-TV/The Wolf Peterborough.

In May, CJCD rebranded from Mix 100 to 100.1 Moose FM. The format remained Adult Contemporary.
